You could use a car to get around. You could use a boat instead of a car. You could use your house to run a generator or other power tools or appliances.

This is what the electric motors used in the home did: they made small motors that were very easy to hide. And if you ever needed to run a small motor, that was the only way. In the 1950s and 60s it was hard to get a motor in a car or boat that was small enough for home use. But when you needed a large electric motor to run a generator or other appliance, it was a lot harder.
