It is one that I strive to live by. I find that my mental and physical self are so intertwined, it often takes more effort not to think about this.

There is a difference between being self-aware and not being aware of our own self-awareness. A person who is not aware of their own self-awareness is not self-aware. The same idea applies to someone who is self-aware.

As a general rule, the more you’re aware of yourself, the more you’re able to control situations that you find yourself in. It’s like the difference between being aware of your own emotions and of other people’s emotions.
